Bold, bold and … Bold! Yes, this new Ulysse Nardin Diver Deep Dive is anything but discreet and is a proper tool watch built to withstand immense pressure. What you see is the new hero piece of the Ulysse Nardin Diver Collection. For the SIHH 2018, Ulysse Nardin is not only playing its innovation and fine craftsmanship cards, it’s also rekindling the design inspirations that made the brand popular a few years ago. Here’s our overview of this strong, powerful dive watch.
Ulysse Nardin is renowned for its close ties to the sea, characterised by a long tradition of producing marine chronometers. More recently, however, Ulysse Nardin has gained popularity thanks to its bold, masculine dive watches grouped under the Diver collection. While this collection has been slightly overshadowed by the Marine (with the new Marine Torpilleur or the redesigned Marine Chronometers), this year the Ulysse Nardin Diver stages a comeback and makes a big splash!
Housed in a 46mm titanium case, the watch is built to withstand extreme pressure and shocks. All the surfaces are angular, sharp or notched. Forget about smooth elegant finishes: robustness is the name of the game. With water-resistance of 1,000 metres, the threshold of the Diver Deep Dive is more than enough for any serious diver – especially if you consider that the world record of 701 metres for deep diving was conducted in an onshore, hyperbaric chamber. The crown, positioned at 2 o’clock is shielded under a movable titanium guard to avoid accidental blows. The helium release valve positioned at 9 o’clock can be activated for prolonged periods underwater and saturation dives. Finally, the large bezel has 12 notched teeth for easy manipulation, even with bulky diving gloves.
The dial is in the vein of UN’s production, with a blue surface embossed with the figures of 15 hammerhead sharks. Large hands and markers, all filled with luminous paint, provide high-contrast in daylight conditions as well as intense luminosity underwater. Because of the crown positioned at 2 o’clock, the small seconds counter is located at 5 o’clock on the dial, adding an original touch to the watch. Several red accents can be found all over the watch, again a signature colour combination for UN.
Protected under the screw-down case back – embossed with another hammerhead shark – is calibre UN-320, an in-house movement with a patented silicium lever and escape wheel configuration. The balance spring is also in silicium, a material Ulysse Nardin first introduced in watchmaking. This modern, self-winding movement has a 28,800vph frequency, a power reserve of 48 hours and is covered by Ulysse Nardin’s 5-year warranty.
The strap of the Ulysse Nardin Diver Deep Dive is in the same functional vein as the rest of the watch and features an expandable element that adjusts to changes in wrist size during dives, caused by the compression of neoprene diving suits.
Clearly intended for action, the Ulysse Nardin Diver Deep Dive will be a piece that requires a serious wrist and some confidence. A true statement dive watch. Limited to 300 pieces and priced at CHF 12,000. More details on www.ulysse-nardin.com.
