A classic chronograph gets a very contemporary treatment from the pair of British and Japanese designers.
There are people who love modified watches and people who hate modified watches. Whichever camp you’re in, the Bamford Watch Department has been in the game longer than anyone and has done some pretty cool things over the last number of years. Last June, Bamford became an official partner of Zenith (with TAG Heuer and Bulgari following shortly thereafter), being authorized to customize the brand’s watches without voiding warranties and causing any animosity. Here, a third partner is introduced to the mix, Fragment Design, which is the firm helmed by Japanese design and streetwear legend Hiroshi Fujiwara.
Why This Watch Matters
For a long time, modified watches were considered the „dark side“ of watch collecting by many. Aftermarket modifications often involved poor quality black coatings and/or clumsily-set gem stones – or worse. Zenith and its LVMH-owned brethren signing an official partnership with a high-quality customizer like Bamford has the potential to change the perception of watches like this in general. I think it will be a long time before this is a really mainstream part of watch culture, but partnerships like the one we have here definitely have the potential to move the needle.
Although a lot of Bamford’s watches fall into „not for me“ territory, I’ve long been a fan of the brand’s creativity, the tangible quality of the products they put out, and the genuine passion for all things horological of founder George Bamford. This watch, however, looks awesome and is something I would totally wear. If you’re familiar with Fragment’s designs in general, this watch will seem right on point, mixing some old-school references (like the hash marks on the chronograph sub-register) with a bold, graphic style.
